Coldplay vs. Sum 41
January 24, 2005
First ANTI-plug of 2005
Charlie of Richmond's Y101 brought this tasty tidbit to our attention. Some guy, apparently of Johnathan Barker Design, noticed that chord-wise and song structure-wise Sum 41's "Pieces" (2004) is a verse for verse, chorus for chorus, bridge for bridge, and break for break copy of Coldplay's "The Scientist" (2002). (Words and vocal melodies are different, for what that's worth.)
We believe in influence and coincidence as much as the next (gullible) guy (willing to buy ocean-front property in Wisconsin), but the similarities are so... err, similar that with only minor tempo tweaking, you can play both songs at the same time and have them match perfectly. Go to the below URL and download the MP3 proof.
