Tristan Prettyman Live in Boston
by Stephen Lin, Editor in Chief
August 9, 2004 + Boston, MA

A REALLY good day
Tristan Prettyman's Love EPFirst of all it was a Friday. And a nice sunny, but not too hot, summer Friday at that. I played a nice game of ping pong at work. I came home and had my favorite ultra-fried wing dings for dinner. But best of all, San Diego singer/songwriter Tristan Prettyman played Boston's Paradise Lounge that night.

Before the show, I accidentally interrupted Ms. Prettyman's dinner to introduce myself. (I didn't see her salad hiding behind a stack of CDs... definitely my bad.) To minimize my interruptiong, I basically just said, "Hi" to which Tristan very pleasantly replied that she "hoped she would live up to [my] review" of her Love EP. Not to sound overly fawny, but she practically emanated niceness.

A REALLY good show
A short while later, Tristan swung by to see if I had any requests for the set list she was putting together. I think two of my requests, "Guest Check" and "Evaporated", were already accounted for, however, I think oldie but extremely greatie "November" was something that did get added. (By the way, I believe MP3s of all these songs are available at TristanPrettyman.com.)

To say that I was psyched is an understatement of monumental proportions. When Tristan hit the stage I was as giddy as a teen-aged girl drunk on peach schnapps. But unlike teen-aged girls drunk on peach schnapps (who almost inevitably barf their brains out), I experienced no downside as Tristan was positively brilliant. It's amazing how some people can fill a room with just their voice and their guitar (but I guess what that really boils down to is talent and presence). In a nice mix of old and new songs (including a fun cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic"), the only perceivable downsides were that Tristan only played for 45 minutes and that the house guy was flipping and dimming the lights somewhat erraticly. And you've got to figure that if I'm nit-picking that much... yeah, it was awesome.
