Whoops... this isn't Bambi!
Master Killer, also known as The 36th Chamber, was the first kung fu movie I ever saw. And it was the coolest thing ever, as far as I was concerned. It was wicked cool, in fact. I just longed for a teacher that would make me carry buckets of water up a mountain and bang on a gong with a long sledge hammer. The kung fu training I’m referring to is the best part of the movie, aside from Gordon Liu finishing the bad guy with a headbutt to the groin. I just love the crazy tests of strength/endurance/flexibility that comprise the training sequences in this and other similar movies. I mean really, can you think of anything more fun? And thanks to Kill Bill Vol. 2, mainstream audiences are now hip to it, due to Tarantino's tip of the hat to old school training sequences. Savvy kung fu fans will also note Gordon Liu starring as Pai Mei.
Being a kung fu movie, the plot doesn’t really matter here. Suffice to say it’s basically follows the fifth commandment, "honor the mother and father. So in this case, kill the bastards who murdered your parents. It is worth noting that Master Killer is considerably more watchable than most kung fu flicks. It’s pretty entertaining even for those who could care less about monks and three section staves. For those who have a soft spot for kung fu flicks however, it fuckin' rules!
