Samurai sword fights galore
There are very few things you need to know about Azumi.
- Azumi was directed by Ryuhei Kitamura of Versus fame.
- The DVD box enthuses "... the kick-ass heroine (in a cool skin-tight 'period clthing [sic]') takes on as many as 200 foes."
- The movie is basically more than two hours of samurai sword fights a la Kill Bill on super-crack.
What does this all boil down to? An incredible action and gore-filled Samurai epic with great effects and wire work.
One thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the story. While Versus was an wonderfully gnarly flick, I didn't care much for any of the characters and the plot seemed entirely secondary. Azumi does not suffer from any of the weaknesses, but has all the strengths of Versus. For that alone, you should run out right now and find a copy. Hell, you should pick up a copy of Versus while you're at it. Though flawed, Versus is still a blast!
