Tristan Prettyman Love EP
by Stephen Lin, Editor in Chief
February 2, 2004 + Boston, MA
WARNING: Horrible metaphor ahead.
Like a lame and exceptionally hungry walrus, I waited. No, not for pea-brained fish to swim directly into my tusk-lined mouth, but for Tristan Prettyman to offer her Love EP for sale through Paypal. This week, my patience was rewarded and immediately I pounced like a deranged sea mammal on ecstacy... okay okay, enough with the bad metaphors. Short story shorter: I wanted to buy the Love EP but was entirely too lazy to mail out a check or a money order.
Now that I've totally made inefficient use of my time, I've fortunately discovered that the Love EP is easily one of the best purchases I've made this year. The only thing that comes close is a half-priced set of X-Men Minimates, but that's a whole other bad metaphor waiting to happen. Back on track, Tristan Prettyman is one of those singer/songwriters who just has IT. The Love EP showcases IT. And IT makes me very very happy.
The Mraz Connection
I know you're probably sick of how much Newmoanyeah manages to mention Jason Mraz, so I'll be quick about it. I first discovered Tristan through Jason's link page.
From there I checked out some tunes at (the now temporarily defunct) MP3.com and then I popped on over to Archive.org and downloaded the May 1st, 2003 show. And just, wow. Call it borderline solo folk fronted by a voice that might be part Fiona Apple and part Shannon Worrell (but most definitely and distinctly Tristan Prettyman), call it what you will, but most certainly call it brilliantly written and performed
What's not to like?
Beautiful, talented, and from all accounts a wonderful person, there's virtually no reason I can think of for you NOT to check out her music. And by all means, please buy her album. I don't think we've had the pleasure of having Tristan swing through Boston on tour, so we need to encourage that. Oh yeah, if anyone out there wants to burn me a copy of the 4-Track Demo CD, I'd be grateful. Lastly, please forgive my stream-of-consciousness... it's been a busy week. ;)
