Choose Salvation over Starbucks
With the holiday season coming up, I'd like to suggest a few nice things you can do for your community that won't create too much of a vaccuum in your wallet.
First off, the folks at Starbucks can live without your spare change tips for a few days! If you can't pry yourself away from the PC to swing by that semi-annoying bell-ringer, you can donate to the Salvation Army online. Better yet, BE a semi-annoying bell-ringer! It costs you nothing, it's great way to meet people, and you might even pick up a date -- chicks love guys who do good work.
Are you gonna eat that?
Clean out your kitchen and donate those canned foods to your local food pantry. You ALL have at least one can of unappetizing veggies at your house. Maybe even some unopened boxes of instant potatoes. (Me, I seem to stockpile Jell-O.) So, put it all in a bag and drop it off with a local church or charity.
Apart from bell-ringing and tossing things you bought that you never really intended to eat anyway, here are some other ideas:
- Goodwill. It's, umm... good.
- United Way. If you work for an über company like I do, they might let you do some volunteer work occassionally and skip out on the daily grind!
- If you're a musician, consider offering your skills of an artist to a retirement home... they're thrilled when you do this!
- And PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE don't forget about Newmoanyeah's favorite charity, Toys for Tots. Eveybody deserves some great childhood memories.
As Elliot Ness would say, "Let's do some good". Besides, it might also help some of you get off the Naughty List.
