2002 Staff Picks

January 6, 2003

Lord of the Rings: Return of the KingWe (meaning Editor Steve in particular, in this case) are incredibly sorry for our laziness at not having provided you, the readers, with new content in the last two weeks. It's been a hectic few weeks with the holidays, day jobs, and keeping ourt international puppy prostitution ring going. We'll kick off the new year with our best of 2003 feature and the knowledge that boobies sold really well last month. In no particular order...

Stephen Lin, Editor in Chief
Best Album: Jason Mraz Waiting for My Rocket to Come (except that really came out in 2002); otherwise I'd say any number of Mraz bootlegs; otherwise I'd say Howie Day Stop All the World Now
Best Movie: Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Best New Website: www.newmoanyeah.com

Kerri Skarfe, Other Worldly Staff Writer
Best Album: Evanescence Fallen
Best Movie not including LotR: RotK: Pirates of the Caribbean
Best Book: The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla – Thankee sai, Stephen King!

Matt VanWinkle, Lemurish Staff Writer
Best Album: The only CD I own released this year is my dissertation advisor reading "Poetry of the Four Seasons." Not most people's cup of tea, but pretty good.
Best Movie: Until I see Return of the King, Mystic River gets the nod. Best place to see live major league baseball other than Fenway Park: PNC Park in Pittsburgh is beautiful, well-designed, and appeals to old-fashioned fossils like myself while providing the peripheral lures of the modern park. I also had the good fortune to be sitting next to fans who were passionate and knowledgable about a terrible team without being whiny or obnoxious. Sox fans (myself included) could take note.

Johanathan Mason, JapaNerd Staff Writer
Best Album: Radiohead Hail To The Thief
Best Movie: Kill Bill Vol. 1
Best Game: Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne

Missie Horal, Scattagoric Staff Writer
Best Album: Technically not an album, but I have to say any of the live Mraz shows.
Best Movie: I'm going to go out on a very short limb and say The Return of the King, although Finding Nemo would be a very close second.
Best Reason not to move to California: Arnold the Governator, followed closely by shark attacks, skin cancer, smog poisoning and excessively hairy people.

Mitch Krpata, Amphibious Staff Writer
Best Album: Andrew W.K. The Wolf
Best Movie: 28 Days Later
Most satisfyingly humiliated celebrity: Tie - Paris Hilton, Rush Limbaugh

Justin Montanino, Post Humorous Staff Writer
Best Album: Kelly Clarkson's "Thankful," only to be outdone by Kelly Clarkson's renditions of "Stuff Like That There" and "Without You"
Best Movie: I think Spellbound was the only movie that I didn't fall asleep to all year. But in the interest of full disclosure, I never did get to see Kangaroo Jack. (P.S. I know Editor Steve will say Cowboy Bebop.) [Still haven't seen Cowboy Bebop, yet! - Editor Steve] What I learned about myself this past year: I don't hate cats as much when they're my own.

Lisa Turner, Groovalicious Editor
Best Album: The White Stripes Elephant
Best Movie: Documentary: Spellbound, Indie film: Camp, Feature Film: Pirates of the Caribbean Best New TV Trend: Sexy Dorks. Please see Christopher Gorham's Jake Foley on "Jake 2.0" or Adam Brody's Seth Cohen on "The O.C."

Best Album: The Devin Townsend Band Accelerated Evolution
Best Movie: Head of State
Best Embarassing Moment: Kobe to his wife: "Don't worry honey. I cheated on you but I swear I wasn't rough with her."

Jennifer Saylor, Comic Conventional Staff Writer
Best Album: Okay, I had better say it's Jason Mraz or I think I'll be kicked out of the club. I actually didn't buy very many records this year, partly because I wasn't really impressed by much and ended up getting older stuff. I am going to go with the Pirates soundtrack.
Best Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean. (Runner up: Kill Bill Vol 1)
Best Action Figure: 12 inch Wonder Woman from the Justice League line of toys.
