Horror Nerds Rejoice
What sends horror nerds into fits of euphoria? What movie sports such poetic lines as "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth"? George Romero's classic Dawn of the Dead, of course. With the impending release of the remastered DVD approaching and the Dutch import two DVD set already available (including the 139 minute Director's cut, Dario Argento's 117 minute European Cut, and Roy Frumkes' Document of the Dead), I think a few words on the cult classic are in order.
The second in Romero's trilogy, Night of the Living Dead and Day of the Dead being the other two, Dawn of the Dead still remains the king of zombie gut muncher movies. The plot is the same as any other film of its genre: zombies take over the earth. Hooray!
Whoa, dude... epic!
The are several aspects of the film that separate it from the dozens of rip-offs. The now famous exploding head scene and many other great moments were done by top notch special effects wizard Tom Savini. The rock score by Goblin is definitely one of the better soundtracks out there. The bleak nature of the film and long length give it an epic quality. And I mean a real epic, not the Hollywood type epic like Russell Crowe's "Thar She Blows."
The real point of this review, however, is to address why is there no porn rip-off of Dawn of the Dead (at least none that I'm aware of). I for one believe every great movie deserves a pornographic spoof. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre had The Texas Dildo Masqurade, and I think it's high time Dawn of the Dead got its due.
