Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

TV! TV! TV!
Queer Eye for the Straight GuyI've become addicted to these shows where people get help with their lives, from home improvements to fashion to redoing their lawn. So I have been waiting for this show big time. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is about five gay guys helping out one straight guy to improve himself, his house, and then some.

The opening of the show is a hoot with techno music going and gay jokes thought the show. The first episode's featured Butch (will they ever have a Fem?) is an artist. The guys, Carson, Jai, Thom, Kyan and Ted, help him lose the hippie ponytail and messy look and transform into a more cultured, sophisticated man.

Fashion and Lots More
Not only does Butch, who's real name is Brian, have his look and his house redone, they get his art into a gallery opening. The guys help him with everything from programs and food to the show itself.

The five really put a lot of effort into every part of making Brian's gallery opening a success, and it's hard to believe this is all happening in one day. Talk about a major lifestyle change in less than 24 hours. I think that they really help Brian's self esteem and confidence in his work, not just by cutting and highlighting his hair, but by becoming his little cheer squad to help him through.

Call The, the Other Fab Five
Hip Tips are featured as part of the commercials and during the show about fashion, food and all that jazz. Each of the Fab Five has their own specialty and they all work toward the goal of making our guy of the day into a better person. They also show his friends giving commentary.

The other thing I like about the show is they don't have to worry about a budget of what they can spend. They just go on a crazy shopping spree!

They have cameras in the house so the queer guys can watch Brian get ready for the big night. Okay, here's the point where you don't want to know where your food comes from. As Brian is preparing the hors d'oeuvres, he's in his towel! YUCK!

The guys continue to critique Brian as he is getting ready (which is just so unlike most gay guys). He dresses in the clothes they got him, but he doesn't wear exactly what they planned on. The straight guy rebels!

When Brian shows up at the gallery opening, it's a riot. The women go nuts for him! This is reason alone to have clueless straight guys standing in line to be made over now. Brian is just a regular guy, but they boosted him up to be a really cool looking regular guy.

But Wait, There's More!
The finishing touch on the gallery event is that the guys arrange for an art critic to be there! So we hope Brian is off to a great start. The show ends with the group reviewing the events and summing up how things turned out with Brian. But wait, we get bonus tips from each of the guys!

And sweet, there's a second episode back-to-back. There go my Tuesday nights! I need these guys to come do a make over for me. Why do they have to do just guys? Uh, I mean, why do they only make over other guys? I think they need to expand to help out the ladies.

Straight Guys, There's Help for You Yet
After seeing two episodes I am totally hooked on this show. In the second show I think they saved a marriage and a house that was taken over by kid's toys! Each episode is very different in its feel. Each day brings a new goal for the straight guy; first it was the art gallery, and on the second show it was a party for the wife's birthday. They have a lot of fun on the show, and teach our man of the hour a few things to help improve his look and confidence as he goes out in the world.

Now I just have to decide who's my favorite queer guy. I'm going for Jai Rodriguez (which is kind of funny as there's a comic book writer with that name too. Maybe they could give him a make over? Maybe we can get Editor Steve on the show?

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is on Bravo, Tuesdays at 9PM Central (I don't know what time it's on in your area. Figure it out yourself).
