Three Geeks and a Girl

Come and knock on our door...
Buffy PosterIt's the modern day version of Three's Company - my new living situation. Except, I'm the female version of Jack Tripper and the guys are no where near as hot as Chrissy.

When I told my friends I was moving into a house with three guys, they thought I was nuts. They asked if I'd end up doing all of the cleaning, cooking, and chores. I assured my over-protective friends that I'd be fine. These guys were geeks, anyway. They'd probably spend most of their time playing computer games.

I was right.

... We've been gaming for you...
The new pad (which their friends call "the Gamepad") is a five-bedroom mansion. Ok, so mansion is too posh of a word, but there's tons of space. Four roomates and five bedrooms means that the guys have an extra-room to call their own. It's on the third floor, so when I come home, I don't hear them upstairs playing Legend of Zelda on Gamecube or the screams coming from the multitude of zombie movies they watch.

The gameroom is hilarious and, as my friend Gracie put it, "it's a teenage boy's wet dream." The room has two couches, a chair, two bookshelves overflowing with DVDs (all labeled as to who owns them) and video games. In front of the 27-inch TV there is a pool of game controllers which go to the video game consoles - we have every console on the market.

... Where the TiVo is his and his and his and hers...
But, recently, it's the TiVo that's gotten all of the attention. Interestingly enough, the top few shows that TiVo records are FoodTV shows, but Star Trek is in there, along with various shows on the Cartoon Network (Trading Spaces gets taped too, and I didn't even ask for it!)

Topping off the game room is a poster of Buffy giving her best "I'm gonna kick your ass/come hither look." Oh yeah, and a Hulk poster.

The boys spend most of their time in this little oasis, giving me the run of the rest of the house.

... She's cooking it too...
Yes, I do the cooking (fitting if I'm the female Jack Tripper of the group) and the grocery shopping, but I asked for those duties. It means the boys do the dishes and I have a pantry full of cooking essentials and not processed food products and Ring Dings.

Living with three geeks has its major plusses. Our apartment is networked and I can get any MP3 I might ever want. We have access to a wireless iBook for Internet browsing anywhere. They figure out the bills and do all the math, and they are respectful enough to take out the garbage when it's full.

"Making geekiness hip!" - Editor Steve
True, some Friday nights I come home to a rousing game of D&D being played at the dining room table. But that doesn't bother me. In fact, a few of my other geeky friends are dying to get in on the action (including Newmoanyeah editor Steve who wants to start a Star Wars RPG campaign.)

But really, after some of the roommates I've had in the past - the manic-depressed filmmaker and semi-psychotic stoner - geeks, so far, have really added up to a great living situation.
