Ehh?
With the end of Buffy nigh, you may be thinking it strange of me to go back to something so trivial as the death of a minor character from the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Well, tough noogies. It's my site and I can write about long-dead hotties if I want to.
Speaking of long-dead hotties, let's get back on topic here. I'm here to review the early demise of Jenny Calendar.
You see, Jenny was one of my favorite characters on Buffy (and not just because she was tied for hottest girl on the show with Faith, played by Eliza Dushku). She was a sexy computer nerd with lots of sass!
Jenny's Rap Sheet
Name:
Jenny Calendar aka Janna Calderash (played by Robia LaMorte).
Occupation:
High school computer teacher, techno pagan, gypsy spy, and love interest of Giles.
Quick Bio
Jenny Calendar was the hip computer science teacher at Sunnydale High. Through a series of mystical adventures, Jenny befriended the Scoobies while helping them avert one of several apocalypses. During this time, she became romantically involved with Giles the Watcher. However, things became shaky when she was temporarily possessed by a demon Giles once ill-advisedly summoned in his youth.
Unbeknownst to the Scoobies, Jenny Calendar was also actually a gypsy named Janna Calderash who belonged to the family that cursed the vampire Angel (by reimbuing him with his soul). Said curse implied that Angel would lose his soul if he experienced true happiness. Lo and behold, Angel deflowered Buffy, his soul went bye-bye, and he became the murderous, souless, moster that he once was.
Jenny's true identity was revealed; Giles sided with Buffy; Jenny felt compelled to make amends and had her neck snapped (without much fanfare) by Angel for her troubles. Thus, the early demise of Jenny Calendar.
Pros and Cons
Jenny's death really helped move the story forward. It made Giles uncharacteristically brash and emotional. It gave additional incentive for Buffy to kill Angel. It allowed Willow to become a substitute computer teacher.
This is all well and good, but damn, she was a rare breed of hot and hip nerd! While the death was probably necessary, we ended up losing one of the best supporting cast members to grace Buffy. (I like Clem the skin demon, too... but he ain't too hot).
