A + B = C
The infectiousness of The Stereo can be explained through a simple equation. If you like rock & rock and you see The Stereo perform live, you WILL fall head over heels in love with their music. This is exactly what happened to me Wednesday night upstairs at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA.
Rather than describe them as "power pop" as many accurately do, I prefer to think of them as good old throwback rock. It's not angsty, politicafied, hip-hop-countronica with whacked out screech-screaming vocals. Instead, it's a ton of loud fun powered by explosive drums, dynamic bass, two roaring Les Pauls, and huge harmonies from singers that can actually sing!
Chloraseptic Doesn't Spoil the Fun
Despite illness forcing heavy doses of Chloraseptic between every song, frontman Jamie Woolford still managed to rock the audience with perfect vocals. And you know what? He still looked like he was having a blast on stage.
For that matter, all of The Stereo seemed like they were having fun; particularly as they confidently eased their way through every cheesy 80's stage cliché in the book. It's mind-bogglingly entertaining, watching them hop around the stage, channeling the spirit of Journey! Why? Because it's pure, unadulterated, rock & roll fun!
"Holy crap, that was awesome!"
I seriously uttered those exact words after the show. Actually, I probably shouted those words as my ears were ring-ring-ringing just a tiny bit. Either way, it was and is the truth.
So, once again, if you like rock & roll, you WILL like The Stereo. (And that's no Jedi mind trick.)
