Daredevil Dueling Movie Reviews
by Jennifer Saylor, Comic Conventional Staff Writer
and Kerri Skarfe, Otherworldly Staff Writer
March 3, 2003 + Des Moines, IA & Boston, MA

Introduction
Daredevil starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer GarnerJS: 2003 is the year of MARVEL Movies and they are starting things off with one of the lesser-known sons of the publisher: Daredevil.

KS: Lesser-known means that I had never heard of him before. So when the movie came out, Jennifer and I decided to write a review together, plotting her comic book expertise and my inexperience against each other, to see if the movie covered both sides of the audience spectrum. We chose the following categories and each have our say. Oh, I probably should mention that my part has one big spoiler. I was annoyed, so deal.

Here's our analysis:

Cast of Characters
Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock, AKA Daredevil
Jennifer's Thoughts

Ben dyed his hair red and wore special contacts. I think he was very convincing as the blind Matt Murdock and was okay as Daredevil. I actually wanted to see more of Matt than DD. You don't often get to see the personal side of a hero. Throughout the movie, director Mark Steven Johnson did a wonderful job of letting the audience "see" the world through Matt's eyes, thus forcing the audience to remember his disability (if you can call it that) and how he goes about his life.
Kerri's Thoughts

Oooohhhh… Ben… Yup, he's beautiful, in the leather, out of the leather. Especially out of the leather - that final burgundy t-shirt he wears is stunning!!! I didn't notice that his hair was red - I spent the beginning of the movie wondering what the hell was up with his hair. I know the guy is blind, but, come on! And then it got wet, and I stopped complaining. I like Ben in the role of action hero and this was no exception.
Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios
Jennifer's Thoughts

I was so ready to bash her as Elektra. But, I was amazingly happy with her performance of the character. And I was happy that the kept her fate true to what happens in the comic for the most part.
Kerri's Thoughts

Sydney Bristow was great!! What? That's not her real name? Whoever you are, you're very beautiful, but silver is not your color. Oh, and what the hell is up with the whole dying thing?? Bastards!!
David Keith as Jack Murdock
Jennifer's Thoughts

David Keith, who played Matt's father was a stand out, even thought he's not in the movie much.
Kerri's Thoughts

That wasn't Ray Liotta?
Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin
Jennifer's Thoughts

Also, Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin, if you're a die-hard fan, might bother you as they change his race, but, I think it played well and they stayed true to the character.
Kerri's Thoughts

It's hard for me to figure Michael Clarke Duncan as a bad guy, but I still really liked him.
Joe Pantoliano as Ben Urich
Jennifer's Thoughts

Sure, Joe wasn't an essential part of the movie, but he's just a cool guy and we enjoyed having him along for the ride.
Kerri's Thoughts

So that's where Cypher went to! He was cool… I liked how the character was not the typical idiot reporter. He's a good guy, too, and it's always good to have friends in the press.
Colin Farrell as Bullseye
Jennifer's Thoughts

Collin Farrell as Bulleye, he's gets his own scenes, but I felt he ended up being more comic relief-y than bad guy-ish. I know he's been getting good reviews, but they made this character a bit lame. He actually asks the Kingpin for a costume so he can be cool like DD!! Can you say, LAME? This is the second scene I would like to cut from the movie.
Kerri's Thoughts

Colin Farrell as Bulls-eye was amazingly, psychotically scary!!! And, all I can say, if HE can live through all that, then Elektra can certainly survive one measly stab wound.
Jon Favreau as Franklin 'Foggy' Nelson
Jennifer's Thoughts

Yeah, what she said! ->>
Kerri's Thoughts

Did he have a point, other than comic relief? I couldn't see one. Is this a judgment on society that a good-looking, intelligent blind man who doesn't sleep at night can't have his own law practice?
Kevin Smith as Jack Kirby (Lab Assistant)
Jennifer's Thoughts

Gotta love the Kevin Smith Cameo in the film. (For the non-comic people, Kevin wrote DD for a while.)
Kerri's Thoughts

How proud am I that I recognized Kevin Smith?? I love him! Though what happened to his hair?
Fight Scenes
Jennifer's Thoughts

One bad thing about The Matrix is now everybody is copying the filming techniques in some way. The best fight scene for me was when DD was a kid in the childhood flashback. The rest of the scenes had your Matrix/Crouching tiger/CGI moves all over the place. The fight scene in the church was only original in its location. One good thing about the fights was watching Matt's use of his hyper-senses to fight and having his perspective of what is going on around him. All of the characters have some moves that were pretty super-human and the CGI gets a bit carried away by the end of the film.
Kerri's Thoughts

All good! I can't decide on my favorite fight scene. I love the introduction of Matt and Elektra. That was fun! But the final showdown of Daredevil and Kingpin was amazing. All that water flying so Daredevil could "see" - that was cool. My favorite part though, was the fact that Daredevil fought without his mask. You don't see Batman doing that. (Ok, at least I don't.)
Soundtrack/Movie Score
Jennifer's Thoughts

We have the top ten grunge acts strategically placed into the movie hoping that they will do as well as the Spider-Man soundtrack. I was happy to hear a Rob Zombie song in the mix of things. I am totally going to run out and buy this for my soundtrack collection.
Kerri's Thoughts

I noticed it in the beginning and thought it interesting, but it didn't stay prominent enough in my mind that I was impressed or moved. Not like LOTR. This is so totally a Jennifer-category.
Romance/Sex Scene
Jennifer's Thoughts

Ben and Jen-No not JLo! Yeah, you had to have them getting hot and heavy. The fireplace was the corniest part of the entire movie, someone blind me with toxic chemicals fast!! Just the last part where they fade out using the fireplace should have been cut!
Kerri's Thoughts

Other than the fact that the transition was weird, the sex scene was OK. I liked the emphasis on his scars, but did anyone else look at the fireplace shot and think "Top Secret?" (You know, how the fireplace is even parachuting down while they kiss?) The whole concept of him being able to see her in the rain was very romantic!!
Plot
Jennifer's Thoughts

Well, justice was served… had enough plot to give characters reasons to try to kill each other
Kerri's Thoughts

The plot was good, though even I felt a lot of strains of Batman. The dad dying outside a movie theater, the son bent on vengeance, etc. But, I liked that Matt Murdock saw himself as the good guy, but recognized the evil he was doing. It was a theme prominent in the beginning of the movie, and I was happy to see him deal with it in the end.
"Feel of the Movie"
Jennifer's Thoughts

The gritty realistic version of Hell's Kitchen was good, but the best parts were the effects that they used to show you Matt's sense of Vision.
Kerri's Thoughts

I felt like the movie was choppy, that there was a definite lack of flow and transition between plot moves. Maybe those parts are going to end up on a DVD someday. I hope so.
Stan the Man
Jennifer's Thoughts

Young Matt stops an older gentleman from crossing the street and almost gets hit by a car -- that's Stan Lee (creator of DD, Spidey and most of the Marvel Universe). Nice that you actually had time to see him in this movie. In Spider-Man, he had, like, one second of film time.
Kerri's Thoughts

No way!!! And I was so proud to recognize Kevin Smith…
Would You Recommend This Movie?
Jennifer's Thoughts

I'd recommend this to non-comic fans and most "True Believers" will go to help support the movie and comics in general. Good warm up for X2. As you can tell by the first week's numbers it was a good Valentine's Day date flick.
Kerri's Thoughts

Yeah! It's a good action movie with a great hottie for both boys and girls!

Final Thoughts
JS: Stay when the credits start; they give you one more scene toward the middle of the credits. You won't have to wait too long.

KS: I almost missed that! I'm still bitter I missed it at Harry Potter 2. Damn movie people.

JS: On a Comic scale of 1 to 10 I give DD a 5, not a lot to work with but some people might go pick up some DD comics because of the movie. The other good thing about going to see DD is to see the X-Men 2 trailer!!

KS: And the League of Extraordinary Gentleman! Not that I have any idea of who they are, but it looked cool!

Who would you most like to see as the lead in Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman movie?
Catherine Zeta-Jones
Eliza Dushku
Sandra Bullock
Aria Giovanni
Summer Glau
Eva Longoria
Evangeline Lilly
Lynda Carter
