Celtic Pride: Antoine Walker

From Dud to Stud
Antoine Walker was never really a dud. But, by the way the Boston media once treated him, by the way the fans once booed him, and by the way his name was once constantly mentioned in trade rumors, you would have thought he was.
Walker came into the league after his sophomore season at the University of Kentucky. He joined a Celtics team rapidly falling from grace in the post-Bird era and, by default, became a "franchise cornerstone." Though as full on talent as the bladder of a sorority girl after a night at a frathouse, Walker may not have been prepared for the weight of such responsibility.
Now six years, three all-star appearances (not to mention three coaches), and one Cinderella-like playoff run later, Walker has proven himself an invaluable leader worthy of the Celtics pantheon.
What was wrong?
The people of Boston seriously treated Antoine Walker like a retarded, six-headed, gibberish-speaking, leper at times. He was questioned about his shot selection (particularly as a power forward). He was misinterpretted (mish-mash about "Veteran All-Stars" not needing to report to camp early or something). And people wondered if he'd ever actually make the team better.
Walker's shot selection is still questionable at times. However, he's hit plenty of clutch (not to mention game-winning) shots that I believe things fall into balance. As for being misinterpretted, Antoine has become a clear communicator, both with the media and his teammates. And, at this point, it's completely undeniable that he does make the Celtics a better team.
Love him for what he is!
Walker is the glue that holds this team together. He's an emotional leader who is extremely vocal in focussing the team. He's accepted his role and has helped others accept theirs.
Don't forget that, off the court, he's also active in the community, particularly helping out with kids. He's a big-hearted guy who doesn't seek recognition for his good deeds.
He's loyal. Not only has he demonstrated this by standing by Vin Baker through this travesty of a reclaimation project, but he's also clearly stated that he wants to play out his entire career as a Boston Celtic. Antoine Walker bleeds green and I hope that the fans of Boston realize this now. |
