Killing Joke
Animal Man #5 cover by Brian BollandBrian Bolland is a genius. An artistic genius of monumental proportions in my opinion. (You're probably familiar with his artwork on Alan Moore's legendary Batman: The Killing Joke graphic novel.)

The Killing Joke is just one tiny chapter in the epic that is Brian Bolland's career. While he's contributed to the likes of Judge Dredd, The Invisibles, and Camelot 3000 my personal favorite may very well be his Animal Man cover work. Brian's covers are just POWERFUL are probably the most potent in the way they compel, captivate and intrigue.

How to Draw the Brian Bolland Way
Now that I've blown several tons of sunshine up Brian's ass, I'd actually like to get to my point. Artistic virtuosity aside, Brian also impresses with his "technical" ability.

While recently visiting the gallery at BrianBolland.com, I stumbled across a stellar step-by-step tutorial that explains how Brian produced the cover for Gotham Knights #37. He amazingly produces everything using Adobe Photoshop 5.5 and a Wacom drawing tablet.

So, here's what you should do:

  1. Go write an email to Adobe and ask them to donate a copy of Photoshop 7.0 to Brian (hey, it'd be great publicity for them).
  2. Go buy a Wacom 9x12 Intuos2 graphics tablet for moi, Editor Steve.
  3. Go check out Brian's website (particularly if you're a Photoshop geek).
Who would you most like to see as the lead in Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman movie?
