Red Alert! There are spoilers in this review. You have been warned!
Okay, if you're a die-hard fan, you may have read everything about the movie already. Or you're like me and you got more info than you wanted, so you stayed out of the Star Trek sites to not ruin it. I went into this movie like many other fans, knowing there was a clone of Picard, another Data running around and Romulans and Remans aplenty.
You may also know that Troi and Ricker finally get married and that there's a dreaded rumor that Data dies in the film.
We still don't have this cloning thing figured out after 300 years!
First, Picard "meets his match in his younger self" Shinzon (Tom Hardy). He's an interesting character and you kind of get attached to him. He's more tragic than menacing. If anything, you pity him after a while. Not my all-time favorite bad guy, but the one-on-one scenes with Picard make Shinzon a formidable character. Of course there's never a doubt that the older and wiser Picard will prevail, as he knows his own faults. Shinzon has a badass ship and a planet of Remans to back him up, though! Also, check out Viceroy, it's Ron Pearlman!!
Next we have the other android, B4 (Before). He has his uses; we will talk about him later.
I Do
The wedding was nice; Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) and Wesley Crusher (Will Wheaton) are present at the ceremony. As I mentioned in another article, all of Wesley's dialogue got cut, but at least he's there. I always thought that never seeing Wes again was a loose end, so this kinda takes care of that.
Some of my favorite Star Trek moments are the lighthearted scenes; like Data singing at the wedding. I love that! Brent Spiner has a great voice and if you haven't heard him sing you should get the album Old yellow Eyes is Back or watch the film Out to Sea.
New baddies, a new admiral and Riker the Vampire Slayer!
I won't bore you with the movie plot, as it's typical Star Trek stuff.
It was nice to see the Romulans and their home world. We get a great space fight with a Reman ship, the Enterprise E and two Romulan Birds of Prey.
I was disappointed that Troi got telepathically assaulted by Shinzon. The whole personal violation thing is a bit overused. The only reason it happens is too facilitate Troi's later usage of a Ouija board thing with Worf.
Riker gets to kick some Reman butt (that of the Viceroy). And yes, they used Nosferatu as inspiration for the Remans... I was really hoping for a stake in the heart, but in typical boring fashion, the bad guy doesn't go out the way he should. Remember, they were going for PG-13 here.
One more casting note: the Romulan Commander Donatra is played by Dina Meyer (Starship Troopers and Birds of Prey). I liked her! She was one of the few surprises in the movie. Speaking of Surprises, what the hell is up with Admiral Janeway?! So she gets lost in space for a few years and they make her an Admiral?! Hey, I think she rocks, but that was one fast promotion in my opinion. Good thing Jean-Luc took Kirk's advice about Star Fleet trying to put you in a desk job!!
He's dead, Jean-Luc.
Now we get to the main thing that will have Star Trek fans up in arms debating all over the internet for the next year: Data dies.
Now, Data is my main android and I was pretty upset about this. No, I didn't cry like Troi but I couldn't believe it! I had heard this was going to happen but Data is one of the most popular characters in the history of Trek. As I watched this on the screen all I could see were the loopholes they left to bring him back. Yep, just like Spock, I am pretty sure Data will be "reborn".
This is where B4 comes in and I would bet my Data action figures (mint in the package) that Data will be back if they make a Star Trek 11. But in the meantime Spot is an orphan!!! Remember Spot the cat? He even gets a scene in the movie. I have a feeling Picard will be the one to keep Spot and B4 on the Enterprise.
Make it so.
I am going have to say that this is my third favorite in the four Next Gen movies (Insurrection, First Contact, Nemesis and Generations).
Also, another fine score by Jerry Goldsmith (if anyone would like to buy it for me for Christmas). I had to stay while the credits ran, just to listen to the theme. The only other thing I will comment on is they only made four action figures for this movie!!! No Riker for Kerri for Christmas this year.
Nemesis was a great movie; I didn't leave this one like I left the last two Star Wars movies (dazed and confused), but the end of the movie had many of us is a state of shock. And just as we were after Wrath of Khan, we left the theater feeling like we lost a close friend. Now we will have to wait to see what they come up with for the next movie.
Which reminds me of Shinzon telling the Romulans to have patience...
