Mmmmm... Murder
With Kill Dr. Lucky, Cheapass Games has taken the traditional whodunit board game and turned it into Iwannadunit. Objective: just as the name of the game says, kill Dr. Lucky. No hidden agenda here. You're in his house, there are weapons aplenty, and your motive? Duh, you want to WIN!
It can't be THAT easy, can it?
Well, no. There are a few "rules". (Stupid games with their stupid rules.) No one can SEE you kill Dr. Lucky, everyone else playing is going to try to do it first, your movement through the mansion can be painfully slow, and Dr. Lucky is, well, lucky. And that's lucky in life, not love. (I think "Bed Dr. Lucky" is another game.) He escapes... several times. But eventually after being stabbed, poisoned, slapped, maimed and poked in the eye, he does die.
Death by Monkey Paw
As with other Cheapass games, (see Unexploded Cow), the creativity doesn't stop with the rules. The weapons are not your typical lot. Players have such items as bad cream, crepe pans, canons, and -- my personal favorite -- a monkey paw, at their disposal to dispose of Dr. Lucky. As one would logically conclude, some weapons work best in certain rooms. For example, you may care to note for future murders, that monkey paws, while able to be used anywhere, really pack a wallop in foyers.
Please sir, may I murder some more?
This game's popularity can best be illustrated by the fact that there is a posting of "variations" submitted by fans of Dr. Lucky on the Cheapass website. Variations include killing Dr. Lucky and his dog, killing the other players, or having Dr. Lucky try to kill you. While murder abounds in all of these variations, the winning objective remains the same - knock off the doctor. The other murders are just for fun!
Two Monkey Paws Up
Overall, this game is $7.50 very well spent. The first game played may move a bit slowly because everyone is trying to figure out the rules. But once you get the feel for how the game is played, it's a good time. Once you get REALLY comfortable with the format, you can start adding the variations to keep it fresh, or come up with your own.
Buy it. It's cheapass. You deserve cheapass.
