Mekanix: Misspelled but Good

Not Litter!
Someone once commented to me that "Kitty Pryde" sounded like a brand of cat litter. This, of course, was absolutely horrifying to me as we were discussing a character with whom I'd been infatuated with since I was 12.
You see, Kitty is a Jewish computer-nerd mutant, who can become intangible at will, who owns a purple pet dragon named Lockheed, and who happens to be a card-holding member of the world-famous X-Men. I'm an Asian computer-nerd, who can hand-code HTML like a champ, who owns a black and white pet cat named Miles, and who happens to be a card-carrying staffer of newmoanyeah. With so much in common, how could I not feel some sort of connection to her.
So, over the years, I just sort of grew attached to Kitty. Perhaps it was simply because we were both teenagers growing up. Perhaps it's just because she's just a great character (well done, Mr. Claremont.)
Anyhoo... Mekanix
It was greating reading Kitty's adventures with the X-Men and Excalibur. And it was great reading about Kitty in adventures like Kitty Pryde & Wolverine, Pryde & Wisdom, and Kitty Pryde: Agent of Shield. Amazing that Marvel's gotten such good mileage out of a "lesser" known character, eh?
And now we get to watch Kitty grow up a little more in another mini-series titled, Mekanix. Yeah yeah... they had to sneak an "X" somewhere into the title. But don't let that scare you off.
Mekanix (in all it's misspelled glory) looks to be a solid character-driven story based on a familiar "racial tension" back-drop in mutantdom. The first issue (of six) reintroduces us to Kitty, who seems older, sexier, angrier, and a bit jaded. Kitty's now a student at the University of Chicago who's trying to, but not fully succeeding in, living a "normal" life.
To be honest, the first issue was little more than an introduction to the major players and the overall scenario. However, I'm expecting good things. And if things are REALLY good, this series has the potential of becoming an on-going series. (More Kitty for me! Boy, that really sounds bad...)
Disclaimer
I'd just like to make it known that I was completely horrified when I saw the X-Men: Evolution valley-girl version of Kitty. I feel like Evolution-Kitty reminds me more of a character from Clueless than the X-Men
Kitty (Sumela Kay) also had a brief cameo in the first X-Men movie. Movie-Kitty didn't do anything spectacular other than walk through a wall. However, look for replacement Katie Stuart (The Crow) to have a larger role as Kitty next year in X2.
Now go buy Mekanix. |
