Who Will Win My Holiday Affections

Kerri Obsess?
Each holiday season, there's usually one movie I totally obsess about. Last season, there was little contest…The Fellowship of the Ring blew the competition away. Once, there was even a coup…in 1997, the battle was won and Tomorrow Never Dies had triumphed until my sister took me to see Titanic on Christmas Eve. Never fear, Tomorrow Never Dies has won the test of time…it's my favorite Bond movie and I watch it regularly. I saw Titanic more times in the theatres than I have in my own home. (And to those who know how many times I saw Titanic in the theater, shh!!)
This year, the competition was strong, with four movie possibilities out there. I've had to automatically eliminate Star Trek Nemesis due to the fact that I get all teary-eyed every time I think of it. Damn Riker for marrying her! To weed through the remaining three, I chose a character to represent each movie, selected attributes that matter to me, and plotted them against each other. Here are my results:
| Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets |
Die Another Day |
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers |
| Chosen Representative: Harry Potter |
Chosen Representative: James Bond |
Chosen Representative: Strider |
| Boys with Toys |
| Magic Wand, Cloak of Invisibility, invisible flying car |
Watch, glass-breaking ring, invisible car |
No toys |
The Winner: Harry Potter Poor Strider is completely out-technologied in this category, unless you count a horse, and I don't, because it's not even his. How strange is it that Bond and Harry cancel each other out so well? Two invisible cars leave only one flying car. John Cleese dead and alive cancels himself out, leaving Bond Q-less, and therefore toy-less. But I wonder if I can borrow Harry's cloak of invisibility to um…hang out…with Bond. |
| Sex Appeal |
| Sorry, you must be 18 or older to play |
Suave, sexy, steely blue eyes, looks good in a tux |
Man of the earth, warrior |
The Winner: Strider As a life-long Pierce Brosnan lover, this category didn't turn out the way I expected it to. I kept true to the characters, not the actors, and Strider came out on top. (Ahhh.) Bond is beautiful, but Strider is magnificent. His on-scene presence…um…took my breath away…more than once. Yeah. That's it. |
| Weapons |
| Magic wand |
Guns, heat-seeking lasers, swords |
Sword, daggers |
The Winner: Harry Potter The key word: MAGIC. Give me a magic wand any day, and I'll turn those guns and swords into fish! Or just pull them out of your hand! Expelliarmus! |
| Friends |
| Ron and Hermione |
Jinx, M, Q |
Legolas, Glimli, Arwen, Eowyn |
The Winner: Strider I'd much rather have Strider's partial Middle Earth crew behind me than Ron's broken wand and Hermione's cat issues. And need I say that I really don't want to deal with Bond's continual pack of Bond Girls? |
| Standing in Society |
| Defeater of Lord Voldemort, youngest Gryffindor Seeker in a century |
Double-O agent with license to kill |
King |
The Winner: Strider Harry won't be taken seriously until he graduates and Bond does a stint as an outcast. Besides, come on, King! It's good to be King! |
Strider Wins!!!
Wow. I wrote most of this chart before I saw The Two Towers, so I thought that it was going to be a much closer race. I thought Bond was going to be a contender!
It's been 2 hours since I left the movie theater from The Two Towers and I'm already trying to suck friends and family members into returning with me. So far, I haven't gotten any arguments.
Let the obsession begin!
